This article provides instructions for connecting Slack to your Akooda account. This connection essentially provides Akooda with access to all public channels in your entire organization, as well as private ones to which the Akooda bot was manually added by participants.
For more information about how Akooda helps your organization evolve and the inherent privacy and security protections in place, see Akooda Integration Principles.
Before We Begin
Before connecting your organization’s Slack account, check that:
You’re an Admin in Akooda.
You’re an Admin in Slack.
NOTE: At any point, if the Slack user is deleted Akooda app will be deactivated and the sync will stop working. In such a case, another Slack workspace admin can open the “list of apps and integrations” to reactivate the app and re-initiate Akooda’s processing (as mentioned by Slack’s Manage deactivated members' apps and integrations guide).
How to Connect
Step 1: Link the Slack User with Akooda
Sign into Akooda (app.akooda.co) with your admin user.
Navigate to the “Apps” page under the Account Settings (app.akooda.co/settings/apps)
Click on the “Connect” button for Slack, which will open an app installation page.
Sign in to your organization’s workspace with your admin Slack account.
Click “Allow” to provide consent for Akooda to view the information needed to connect Slack (as referenced in Slack’s Permission Scopes guide).
NOTE: The permissions granted include seeing content about channels, conversation workspace and users. These permissions are required for Akooda to be able to analyze the users’ public interactions. Additionally, Akooda requires permissions to perform actions in channels & conversations in order to send push notifications to individual Akooda users per their own configuration, and permissions to perform actions in workplace (Add slash commands) to enable the use of the Akooda Bot .
Following Akooda’s “Least-privilege Models” policy. The requested permissions do not include any other write permissions.
Step 2 (optional): Invite the Akooda Bot to Private Channels
Oftentimes, conversations begin their life as direct messages, then evolve to a private conversation as the discussed matter requires more participants to be actively engaged. However, due to Slack’s privacy policy, when the topic becomes mainstream the original channel cannot become public.
In such cases, the Akooda app needs to be invited into the private channel in order to begin the scan. Below are the steps to get that done.
As a channel member, click on the channel name (usually in the top left corner).
Next, click on the “Integrations” tab and then “Add apps” link.
In the pop-up screen, search for “Akooda” and click “Add”.
NOTE: This action will be shared with all channel participants, much like when a new user is invited to the conversation, and can be removed at any time. This is key to allowing everyone participating to maintain their right for privacy. Once removed, the processed data history will also be purged from Akooda. Moreover, private interactions will be descriptively shown only to members with view permissions and above within the Akooda app.
Next Up
Processing your organization's data post initial integration may take up to 24 hours. Once done, you will be able to see tagged Slack interaction data in your Akooda account (according to each individual user’s access permission).
